Disney Staycation Day 12: Exploring Peru

Today the boat docked in Peru for a day of exploration. We were up bright and early to set off on an expedition to Machu Picchu. The girls chose their own explore outfits (Indiana Jones and Dora the Explorer) and we were ready to leave by 8am.

The roads were narrow and winding (good job I remembered the travel sickness tablets) and as we got closer to the site we had to abandon the vehicle and complete the journey on foot. It was a long, dangerous trek (well, Polly can trip over her own shadow so anything is dangerous!) but we finally made it.

The girls loved climbing up the ruins as well as picking the nose of the rock-formation (must have been the remains on an Inca God statue!)

The Incas must have given Walt his ideas as Winnie found numerous hidden Mickeys on the rocks.

Indy’s whip came in useful for some of the trickier climbs too!

We decided to leave before lunch as ancient Inca sites don’t have any toilets and we didn’t want to anger the gods by having to do a bush wee on their sacred land!

We headed back to the ship for lunch before examining the local wildlife, making a snail home (although the lesser known Peruvian snail is apparently so rare that there were none to be found!!)

The girls then helped a local scientist (aka daddy!) to test the soil for acidity and composition.

The day was finished with a traditional Peruvian game of dodge the Unicorn poo (🙄) before watching Indiana Jones and The Temple of a Doom.

The day’s excitement was clearly too much for daddy as he had a Nana nap for most of the film until he was rudely awoken by room service the Tesco onboard shop delivery service!

I have no idea where we will be tomorrow as I forgot to check the itinerary but I’m hoping it’s relaxing (although I’m not holding my breath!!)

Oh, Polly also got down on one knee at Maccha Picchu, as the girls decided to re-enact our engagement as this was the place Steve proposed to me. The Princess Bride is one of my favourite films and this is one of the locations they actually used!!
